Algeria sent a representative to negotiate with the Niger army
The Algerian government said it sent the Secretary General of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Lounes Magramane to Niger this Thursday as part of improving diplomatic relations, after the military coup in the neighboring country.
This comes a day after the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Algeria, Ahmed Attaf, began a tour of West African countries with the aim of finding a solution to the political crisis in Niger, where the Algiers government is against any military intervention after the coup.
ECOWAS has threatened to use force to return the elected president of Niger, Mohamed Bazoum, to his seat, who was detained by the military on July 26.
Algeria, which has a border with Niger, 1,000 kilometers to the south of the country, has warned of taking military action, where President Abdelmadjid Tebboune said it would be a direct threat to his country.
The country shares borders with Libya and Mali, which have been in conflict for years.
Niger is the fourth country in West Africa since 2020 to undergo a coup, after Burkina Faso, Guinea and Mali.
The military authorities of Burkina Faso and Mali have said that any military intervention in their neighbors will be considered as a declaration of war against their countries.
