Bazoum is still the President of Niger - America

The meeting between Blinken and Bazoum is coming as the military coup d'état appointed governors in eight states in the country.

The US Secretary of State, Antony Blinken, said that the US still continues to show support for President Mohamed Bazoum, who was overthrown by the country's army last week.

Blinken stated this during a meeting with Bazoum by telephone on Wednesday, according to a statement issued by his office.

Last week, the soldiers guarding the presidential palace of Niger led by General Abdourahame Tchinia detained Bazoum and declared a coup d'état, a situation that was condemned by many countries around the world.

"Secretary Blinken stressed to Bazoum the continued support of the United States and Niger's democratic system.

"He also emphasized that the United States opposes the overthrow of the democratic system, and he showed that he is with the people of Niger, ECOWAS, AU and other friendly countries that support democratic governance and respect for the rule of law and the protection of human rights. .” The statement said.

The meeting between Blinken and Bazoum is coming as the army has appointed governors in eight states in the country, something observers say is an attempt by the army to seize power.
