Niger cut ties with Nigeria
The military government of Niger has cut ties with Nigeria, Togo, the United States and France, after the team sent by Ecowas to negotiate with the soldiers who overthrew President Bazoum failed to reach a settlement with the soldiers.
In a speech he made on the Nigerian media, the leader of the coup, Colonel Amadou Abdramane announced the decision and other measures they have taken.
He said, "We have ended all diplomatic relations with Nigeria, France, Togo and the United States. Any agreement reached in the past has collapsed."
The delegation sent by Ecowas to negotiate with the Niger army under the leadership of General Abdulsalami Abubakar met with some of the soldiers on Thursday but no agreement was reached.
The chief military officers of the Ecowas countries have concluded a meeting in Abuja, where they discussed the possibility of taking military action against Niger if mediation fails.
