Niger: Open its borders with other countries
The new military government of Niger has reopened its land and air borders with five neighboring countries.
The spokesman of the military government in a speech on the country's television said that the access roads to Mali, Burkina Faso, Algeria, Libya and Chad have been reopened. However, the borders of Niger, Benin and Nigeria, all of which are members of the Economic Development Organization (ECOWAS), will remain closed.
Currently, the delegation of ECOWAS with representatives of 15 countries, under the leadership of Nigeria, is visiting Niamey to discuss with the leaders who made the coup, said the Commissioner for Political Affairs, Peace and Security of ECOWAS, Abdel-Fatau Musah.
This Wednesday (2.08.2023) the security chiefs of the West African Union are meeting in Abuja, the capital of Nigeria, to discuss how to respond to the coup d'état in Niger last week which resulted in fear of conflict in the Sahel region of West Africa.
