The Nigerian Statistics Authority has stated that the agricultural sector lost 577 billion dollars as a result of the floods that engulfed many states of the country last year.

The federal government of Nigeria has said that the amount of money that has been lost has been revealed in a report by the Statistics Commission which has not yet been released officially.

The National Statistics Officer, Semiu Adeniran said, before compiling the report, the Statistics Commission had to conduct an investigation with the cooperation of the United Nations and also the National Emergency Relief Agency, NEMA.

The investigation focused on Anambra, Bayelsa, Delta, Jigawa, Kogi and Nasarawa states.

However, the figures show that Jigawa state is the one that suffered the most, as the floods affected more than 90 percent of the households in the state.

Adeniran said that the floods have also affected the economy and interrupted some important activities, but the agricultural sector is the most affected.

The crisis has caused a 94 percent reduction in harvest, while food prices have skyrocketed.
