Nothing is better for our country than democracy - Nigerian Army

The Chief of Army Staff of Nigeria, Lieutenant General Taoreed Lagbaja, said that the most important thing for the country in this era is democracy.

The Commander-in-Chief stated this during the graduation ceremony held at the Jaji Military Academy in Kaduna, according to a statement issued by the spokesman of the army, Brigadier General Onyema Nwachukwu.

Lieutenant General Lagbaja said that the soldiers must be reminded that their assistance in ensuring the stability of the government is the main way of showing professionalism in the military.

He also said that the main goal of every Nigerian now is the sustainability of democracy, which will ensure national unity and protect the interests of Nigerians, regardless of religious or ethnic differences.

"Therefore, I am calling on all Nigerian soldiers to contribute to ensuring the sustainability of democracy, and avoid getting involved in political issues during their duties," said the army chief.

He also emphasized the desire of the armed forces to ensure the safety of lives and properties of the country.

Lieutenant General Lagbaja said that the army in collaboration with other security forces are working day and night to ensure the protection of the country.

The Chief of Army Staff was speaking at the same time that the Ecowas group of countries gave the soldiers who overthrew the civilian government of Mohamed Bazoum in Niger a week to return him to power and face a series of sanctions, including of military rank.
