Senegal's Ministry of the Interior says it is taking measures to maintain peace as the opposition continues to protest in parts of the country.

Demonstrations are continuing in the country's capital Dakar and Ziguinchor, the city led by Ousmane Sonko as mayor.

Sonko's arrest and subsequent disbanding of his party fueled the recent protests.

Sonko continues to be detained, and on Sunday he announced the beginning of a hunger strike.

On Monday, the Minister of the Interior of Senegal, Antoine Félix Abdoulaye Diome announced the dissolution of Sonko's party Patriots of Senegal (Pastef) for allegedly inciting conflict in the city of Dakar.

The supporters of the Pastef party accused the party of President Macky Sall of trying to get rid of his main opponents.
