The British Court Charged Diezani on Allegations of Accepting Bribery
Alison-Maduke held the position of Minister of Petroleum during the reign of former Nigerian President Goodluck Jonathan from 2010 to 2015.
A court in the United Kingdom has charged the former head of the Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC), Diezani Alison-Maduke with the crime of accepting bribes when she held the position of oil minister in Nigeria.
The National Crime Agency (NCA) in Great Britain announced this on Tuesday.
"We suspect that Diezani Alison-Maduke used her position in Nigeria to receive financial rewards because she awarded contracts worth millions of pounds," said Andy Kelly, who heads the international crime division at the NCA.
Alison-Maduke, 63, has been on bail since her October 2015 arrest in London.
She is expected to appear in court on October 25, according to the NCA.
The former oil minister's lawyer told AFP that Alison-Maduke will challenge the allegations against her.
Alison Maduke held the position of Minister of Petroleum during the reign of former Nigerian President Goodluck Jonathan from 2010 to 2015.
She was the first woman to hold the position of Minister of Petroleum in Nigeria and the position of the head of OPEC.
