The European Union has expressed its full support for the French ambassador to Niger, Sylvain Itte, after his refusal to leave the country despite the deadline given to him by the military that staged a coup.

The spokesperson of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the EU, Nabila Massrali, stated that the decision to give the ambassador a new term is a new threat from the forces that made the coup in Niger and this will not provide a solution to the crisis that has engulfed the country.

According to her, the EU does not accept, and does not see the Niger army as a legitimate government, which shows that they do not have the authority to expel any ambassador.

Last Friday, the Niger Army gave the French ambassador in Yamai Sylvain Itte 48 hours to leave the country but he ignored the decision and continued to stay.

The issue has already caused controversy, where President Emmanuel Macron emphasized that the ambassador will continue to stay in Yamai because the army does not have the authority to expel him.

On the 26th of last month, the Niger Army overthrew the government of Mohamed Bazoum and continued to detain him besides closing any door to dialogue between them and groups and France, which is the country's patron.

This action by the Niger Army has caused the country to face various sanctions in addition to the closure of all its overseas accounts, which has thrown the nation into chaos.
