It is expected that soon the new American ambassador to Niger will start her work in Yamai, the capital of the country.

Kathleen Fitzgibbon was assigned the leadership of the US delegation in Niger when the Deputy Spokesperson of the US Department of State Vedant Patel described the time as very important.

It is also expected that the ambassadors will cooperate with the efforts of the US government to deal with the coup and to support the Americans who are stuck in Niger.

Mr. Patel did not specify when the new representative will go to Niger.

However, he told reporters last Wednesday that her trip to Niger will not show any change in the way the US government views the military coup.

He said that the United States is committed to improving security, stability, and democracy in the Sahel region.

"We continue to advocate for a diplomatic solution that respects Niger's constitution, and for the immediate release of President Mohamed Bazoum and his family," said Mr. Patel.

Ms FitzGibbon is a diplomat with extensive experience working in Africa.

The United States Senate confirmed her as the ambassador to Niger on July 27, one day after the coup in Niger.

Niger has been without an American ambassador since December 2021.
