The CEO of TikTok, Shou Zi Chew held an online meeting with Kenyan President William Ruto and even agreed that the popular video platform will monitor the videos posted in the East African country.
The agreement came after Kenyan lawmakers debated a resolution to ban the TikTok platform for obscene content and videos that promote violent acts and hate speech.
He also confirmed that TikTok, which is owned by the Chinese company ByteDance, will set up an office in Kenya.
President William Ruto will be overseeing the application of the TikTok platform in the region from there.
He said the agreement to filter the video will be an important step to ensure that the videos posted on the TikTok platform are in line with the rules and standards of Kenya, like other social media platforms such as YouTube and Twitter which have now been changed to X.
The President of Kenya said that the government wants to reduce the harmful effects of social media at the same time that Kenya will be able to get the money that is benefited from such software.
The country earns between $2 million and $3 million per month from social media, President Ruto said - without specifying whether the money is the total revenue from the platform or is taxable income.
