Uganda's president has accused the World Bank of forcing the country into same-sex marriage
The President of Uganda, Yoweri Museveni has accused the World Bank of trying to plunge the country into an economic crisis because of the law it created on same-sex marriage.
This comes after the bank's announcement that it will stop lending to the country because it does not support same-sex marriage, which is against the bank's provisions.
However, in a statement he released on social media, President Museveni said "Uganda will grow whether it gets debt or not".
He said it is unfortunate that the bank is trying to "force us to abandon our culture and religion and the things we believe in just to get money".
In May, President Museveni signed into law a law banning same-sex marriage, which provides for the death penalty and 20 years in prison for homosexuals and polygamists.
The World Bank has joined the United States in imposing sanctions on Uganda because of its stance on same-sex marriage.
