Reports from the Niger state of Nigeria indicate that 26 people who lost their lives in a boating accident have been buried.


The accident happened while some farmers were on their way to their farms in Mokwa local government.


The incident happened around eight o'clock in the morning on Sunday according to the authorities.


Data shows that most of the people who died were women and children.


They also came from Gbajibo, Ekwa and Yankyade areas of Mokwa local government.


"The number of people who died stood at 26, most of them were women and children while at least 30 people were rescued." A statement by the Publicity Secretary of Mokwa Local Government Abdullahi Alh. Abubakar Dakani issued a statement on Sunday.


The statement added that the rescue operation is a joint operation that includes skilled swimmers from the area with the staff of the Niger state emergency response agency.


In the middle of June, 108 people lost their lives in a boat accident in Niger state.


Authorities say that most of the accidents are related to overboarding and not wearing a life jacket.
