The leader of the military regime in Gabon, Brigadier General Brice Oligui Nguema, met with the leaders of the country's political parties in his efforts to return power to civilians.

State television showed political leaders on Saturday looking for a military man to ensure the new caretaker government that will be formed delivers a "judicial framework" that would allow a return to democracy.

Tomorrow, Monday, he is expected to be sworn in as the head of the caretaker government.

General Nguema asked the parties to participate in the transition program by contributing to the elections and drafting a constitution "that will include the views of the Gabonese people".

"From now on, we don't want to see three or four politicians get together and change a system that the government will follow, and later hear that it has been agreed to change the electoral system in the national assembly," he said.

The ousted Ali Bongo government has implemented controversial changes to the country's electoral system a month before the August 26 general election, said to have been requested by some opposition parties.
