Governor Zulum launched a plan to plant one million trees
The governor of Borno state in northern Nigeria, Babagana Umara Zulum, has launched a plan to plant 1.2 million trees across the state.
The 2023 plan was launched at the Borno State University Teaching Hospital today Monday to reduce desertification and other environmental problems, according to the state government.
"The theme of this year's program is 'Trees for Resettlement', which is in line with the United Nations theme of 'Let's Green Our City'," said a statement.
The governor asked the residents of the state to use gas for cooking instead of burning trees.
"If action is not taken on cutting down trees, one day we will see the entire Borno state become a desert. We are aware that bandits have caused us to lose 80 percent of our trees," said the governor.
He added that all the trees in the forests were cut down because of security concerns, "and some for cooking wood".
