 I will not complete my term of office on the 2nd of April - Macky Sall

President Macky Sall, who is completing his 2nd term, has postponed the election of the President of Senegal by 10 months, justifying the incomplete resolution of some disputes on who should run for office.

However, the Constitutional Court of the country rejected this move.

In a televised speech to the people of Senegal on Thursday, February 22, Macky Sall said:

"I was sworn in on the 2nd of April 2019, on the 2nd of April the 5-year term of office will end, and that will end my term of office. Moreover, I intend to stop this. After April 2, I will step down from my position as President."

His statement came after the coalition of ruling parties agreed to extend his term of office at the beginning of February.

As a result, some MPs from the opposition left the National Assembly session after it agreed to change the time of the election to December.

The opposition parties continue to put pressure on President Sall, who said he is ready to enter into negotiations next week.

"There is no way this country can exist without a President. Of course, the discussion we will have will make a decision, but we will reach an agreement on finding a solution. I hope the politicians around me will consider the future of our country. I will listen to what will come out of the discussion, and after that, the Constitutional Court will listen to us about the issues."

Fifteen of the twenty candidates who agreed to compete in the postponed elections have reached a decision to hold the election on April 2nd.
