This decision taken by the Security Council on Tuesday comes at a time when the conflict in northeastern Congo has claimed nearly 7 million lives in the past 30 years, while more than 120 armed groups is killing them without any help in their efforts to gain control over the area rich in minerals and natural resources.

The conflict in the region has intensified since the M23 rebels took up arms again in 2021, after a period of silence for almost 10 years.
