 47 medical workers indicted over baby deaths in Turkey

Forty-seven people have been charged in a Turkish court over their alleged role in a scheme to transfer newborn babies to different hospitals for profit.

Prosecutors say doctors, nurses and ambulance drivers caused at least 10 deaths in the scheme.

The men are accused of providing false medical records to transfer 19 babies from public hospitals to private hospitals, where they were kept in intensive care for long periods and given unnecessary treatment.

The indictment alleges that those involved in the scheme siphoned off money from a government subsidy program, which pays for the daily care of newborns at the hospital.

The men have denied the allegations, saying they did everything to save the babies' lives.

If convicted, they could face a long prison sentence for manslaughter, fraud and perjury.

Police launched an investigation after they were tipped off to the scandal in March 2023, which led to the revocation of ten hospital licenses.
