An alleged scandal involving the transfer of newborns to hospitals for care - which has left at least 10 babies dead - has rocked Turkey, with calls for the dismissal of all staff involved and a wider investigation.

In one of Turkey's biggest health scandals, doctors, nurses and ambulance drivers are accused of falsely transferring babies from public hospitals to 19 private hospitals so they could receive the care they needed during their stay.

In November 2016, Tolga Oymak's wife, Nukhet, gave birth to triplets at a prestigious Turkish hospital.

However, the triplets were born as twins, and the hospital's neonatal unit did not have enough bottles to hold all three babies.

So the family had to find a hospital to transfer the babies to.

“Three days later, one of the babies died,” Tolga told the BBC. The doctors told him that the baby had died from respiratory problems and a disease that affects babies under three months old.

“We have two more babies left. The doctors kept telling us that they were in good health.

Five days later, a doctor called him and told him that one of the babies had died, due to respiratory problems, and he needed to go to the hospital immediately.

“We couldn’t get into the neonatal unit, but we saw our baby die through the window.”

“You’ve already killed two babies for me, are you going to kill this one too?” I told the nurse.

“Calm down,” they told him.
