Yaz Plus: South Africa pulls birth control pill from market
The South African Medicines Regulatory Authority has ordered the withdrawal of the popular birth control pill Yaz Plus after a mistake was found in the packaging of the pills, which could reduce the effectiveness of the drug.
The drug's manufacturer, Bayer Ltd, has asked women who have used the pills that were recently released to stop taking them and seek medical advice.
The mistake in the packaging of the pills resulted in a pack containing 24 inactive pills instead of 24 active ones.
The problem affects certain packs, with the manufacturing code WEW96J, and will cease to be available in March 2026.
