 Hundreds of Nigeriens detained in Libya in 'humiliation' complain to their government

At least 300 Nigeriens are suspected of being arrested by Libyan authorities and held in harsh conditions for months.

In a video circulating on social media, hundreds of people were seen crammed into a room calling on Nigerien authorities to release them.

The head of the High Commission for Nigeriens in Libya, Alhaji Sani, confirmed that the video was authentic, adding that the people were arrested while some were on their way to Sabha and were arrested.

Alhaji Sani, who complained about the situation of the Nigeriens, added that it was not only here that Nigeriens were being held in Libya, there were also some in the Libyan capital, Tripoli, who he said were detained even before Ramadan.

He said they had done everything they could to ensure that the Nigerien authorities brought them to justice and intervened to release them but the authorities did not do so.

Now, civil society and human rights groups in Niger have joined in calling on the Nigerien military government to take appropriate action in the matter.
