 TikTok user sentenced to 32 months in prison

A 21-year-old TikTok user has become the latest to be jailed in Uganda after posting a video allegedly insulting President Yoweri Museveni.

Emmanuel Nabugodi appeared in court on Monday after pleading guilty last week to four charges including hate speech and spreading false information about the president.

He was sentenced to 32 months in prison.

Nabugodi, who is known for posting humorous content to his 20,000 followers, made a video of a mock trial of the president. In it, he called for Museveni to be publicly flogged.

Human rights groups have long complained about the country's crackdown on freedom of expression, alleging that the president - who has been in power since 1986 - does not tolerate criticism.

In July, Edward Awebwa was sentenced to six years in prison on similar charges against Nabugodi. Three others are awaiting sentencing for posts on social media.

In sentencing Nabugodi, Stellah Maris Amabilis, the chief judge of the Entebbe High Court, said he had shown no remorse and that the sentence would help curb criticism of the president on social media, including the president.
