 PDP postpones national convention

The main opposition party in Nigeria, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), has announced the postponement of its 99th national convention scheduled for November 28.

In a statement issued by the party’s National Secretary, Senator Samuel Anyanwu, on Thursday, he said the 99th national convention was postponed due to the funeral of Patience Umo Eno, the wife of the Akwa Ibom State Governor.

The move comes at a time when the party is facing internal divisions and disputes.

Following the removal of the party’s national chairman, Senator Iyorchia Ayu, by a court in 2023, the party has announced the appointment of Ilya Damagum as its interim chairman.

However, Damagum has also faced criticism from some members of the party – who have been calling for him to step down.

At their 98th meeting held in April, the party leaders agreed to establish reconciliation and disciplinary committees and organize party rallies from the constituency level to the states.
