 Russia blocks Sudan ceasefire bid

In a move condemned by Britain and the United States, Russia has vetoed a UN-brokered ceasefire in Sudan.

Britain's Foreign Secretary David Lammy said the move was "unconscionable."

Russia, for its part, accused Britain of interfering in Sudan's war without its consent.

The 19-month-old conflict in Sudan is thought to have killed thousands and displaced more than 11 million since fighting erupted in April last year between the Sudanese army and the Sudanese Revolutionary Guard Corps (RSF).

The peace process, led by Britain and Sierra Leone, called for each side to step back and begin talks on a ceasefire, and called on both the army and RSF to respect previous agreements to stop targeting civilians.

Besides Russia, all 14 other countries on the UN Security Council have approved the draft, but Russia's veto means the resolution is not yet in place.
