 Thousands protest against changes to New Zealand's constitution

Thousands of people gathered outside New Zealand's parliament building on Tuesday to protest against a proposal to change the constitution that created the country.

Critics say the changes will curtail some of the rights of the Māori people - the country's indigenous people.

The Māori Queen and several members of parliament were among the protesters.

The BBC's correspondent says that the campaigners are concerned that the proposed changes date back to 1840, during the colonial era, to protect the rights of the Māori people.
