The Nigerian government has said that former President Olusegun Obasanjo is not a role model in governance and other aspects of leadership.

The government made the strong criticism of Obasanjo in response to his criticism of the Bola Tinubu and Muhammadu Buhari administrations during a lecture he delivered in memory of the late Chinua Achebe at Yale University in the United States.

In a statement issued by the Special Adviser to the President on Media and Publicity, Bayo Onanuga, on Monday, the government criticized Obasanjo for what it said was his habit of portraying himself as an expert and giving unsolicited advice on governance and governance in Nigeria, blaming the country's problems on those who came to power after his administration.

The statement pointed to the many problems of corruption, maladministration, violation of the constitution and laws and failure of leadership which it said were all found during the administration of Obasanjo and Atiku but today Obasanjo, as usual, has distanced himself from these failures of his rule and blamed the governments that followed, especially those of Bola Tinubu and Buhari, for the failures.

The government said that if Obasanjo had addressed most of the problems he is now criticizing, during his eight-year presidency, then President Buhari and President Tinubu would have found it easier to try to reform the country.
