Xi Jinping says he will work with Donald Trump

Chinese President Xi Jinping said he would work with US President-elect Donald Trump, in his final meeting with Joe Biden as US president.

The two leaders met on the sidelines of the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) summit in Lima, Peru, despite a trade dispute and differences over the Taiwan issue between the two countries.

In his final meeting as US president with Xi Jinping, Mr Biden urged China to use its influence to prevent Russia from involving North Korean troops in the war in Ukraine.

Mr Biden also expressed concern about China's actions around Taiwan, which he called provocative.

Mr Xi said that despite differences between the US and China, they played an important role in maintaining world peace. He also said that China-US relations will not change

Although Mr Xi has promised to work with Donald Trump, analysts say US-China relations could become more strained if Trump returns to office in two months, due to a number of factors including his promise to raise tariffs on Chinese goods imported into the US.

Trump has promised to raise tariffs on 60% of Chinese goods imported into the US.

Donald Trump considers China to be the US's biggest trade rival, and relations between the two countries have been strained since the first president took office, calling the coronavirus a Chinese epidemic.

This is the third time that Mr Biden has met with his Chinese counterpart, including at the APEC summit last year in San Francisco where the two leaders agreed to fight drug trafficking and climate change.
