 Petitioners for Natasha’s recall did not provide their address – INEC

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has said that petitioners for the recall of the Senator representing Kogi Central, Natasha Akpoti Uduaghan, did not provide the required information as required by the 1999 Constitution.

This was contained in a statement issued by the commission on Tuesday, signed by its Public Relations Officer, Sam Olumekan.

The statement said, “The commission observed after the filing of the complaint that the petitioners did not provide their addresses, telephone numbers and email addresses where they could be contacted.”

“The only address given on the petition is ‘Okene, Kogi State’, which is not sufficient to contact the petitioners,” the statement said.

The statement also added that “only the telephone number of the petitioner was included in the letter, and not the telephone numbers of all the petitioners’ representatives.”

In the statement, INEC said it was ready to follow the constitutional process to issue such summons once the petitioners had complied with the legal requirements.

Senator Natasha Akpoti has been facing summons since her rift with the Senate President, Godswill Akpabio, over allegations of attempted sexual harassment.

However, the Senate has accused Natasha of and violating the rules of the House by refusing to return to her newly transferred seat, and causing a ruckus in the House, which led to her suspension from the House for six months.

The Independent National Electoral Commission of Nigeria has now confirmed that a petition seeking the recall of the lawmaker has been filed against her, with documents being sent to her containing the signatures of half of the 474,554 voters in the 902 polling units in the lawmaker's constituency in Adavi, Ajaokuta, Ogori/Magongo, Okehi and Okene Local Government Areas.
