Kannywood Films Earn Major Nominations at African Movie Awards

It’s a proud moment for Kannywood! Two Hausa-language films have been nominated for prestigious awards at the 2025 African Movie Academy Awards (AMAA) — one of the continent’s biggest platforms for celebrating excellence in African cinema.

The nominated films are:

  • “Tsuntsu Mai Wayo” – Nominated for Best Indigenous Language Film (Hausa)
  • “Fatima da Azaba” – Nominated for Best Cinematography

These nominations are more than just awards; they represent recognition of Kannywood’s growth, creativity, and resilience. The films were chosen not only for their strong storylines but also for their high-quality visuals, acting, and cultural relevance.

Tsuntsu Mai Wayo tells the gripping story of a street-smart orphan who uses intelligence and charm to survive in a harsh society. Meanwhile, Fatima da Azaba is a deeply emotional drama about a woman’s painful journey through betrayal and spiritual redemption.

For many years, Kannywood was seen as a strictly regional film industry. But these nominations show that the industry has matured — and is now competing side by side with Nollywood, South African, and Ghanaian productions on a continental stage.

Actors, directors, and fans across Northern Nigeria are celebrating the news, and hopes are high that the films will bring home awards. Either way, it’s a win for the entire Hausa film community.
