Dangote Petroleum Refinery management has denounced what it termed a flagitious and illegal order by the Petroleum and Natural Gas Senior Staff Association of Nigeria (PENGASSAN), requesting its affiliates to terminate gas/crude oil supply to the refinery.
In its statement on Saturday, Dangote Refinery said the directive issued by PENGASSAN on September 26, 2025, to its affiliates in the leading oil companies, including TotalEnergies, Seplat, Chevron, Oando, Renaissance and Shell Nigeria Gas, went beyond criminal interference and economic sabotage.
The refinery claimed that the union had directed its members to stop loading ships bound to Dangote Refinery, and specifically ordered its NGIC branch chairman to make sure that gas flow to the refinery was turned off "immediately"
The refinery characterized the move as outrageous and irresponsible, and insisted that PENGASSAN has no right, under the law, to meddle with the current supply contracts between the refinery and its suppliers.
The company denied that those supply contracts were signed with PENGASSAN but were signed by Dangote Refinery with third-party suppliers. Under the Nigerian law, it is criminal behaviour that PENGASSAN or any of its members should attempt to disrupt or otherwise interfere with such contracts.
The association was also accused in the statement of contradicting its previous press release where it had committed to take all the legal measures it could against the refinery. Rather, Dangote opined, PENGASSAN had given up legal means and picked up methods that could easily put the nation into mayhem.
According to the refinery, this decrease in supply would affect the production of these basic petroleum products like petrol, diesel, aviation fuel, kerosene, and cooking gas, all of which are products consumed by millions of people daily in Nigeria.
So, in what situation can we say that PENGASSAN should cause unbearable suffering to the life of Nigerians? the company queried. Surely, this order is not in the interest of the Nigerian state or nation.
Dangote Refinery identified itself as a strategic national asset and one of the largest refineries in Africa and the move by the union was viewed as a threat not only to the people of Nigeria but also to foreign investor confidence in the oil and gas industry in the country.
The statement said this was economic sabotage on several levels. PENGASSAN should not be given the carte Blanche over the Nigerians. The result of this order would impact all families in Nigeria.
The company thus requested the Federal Government and security agencies to step in without delay by indicating that running of the refinery and consequently, the energy security and source of revenue of the country were directly threatened.
Dangote Refinery insisted that the Association is not above the law. We want to alert all the people of Nigeria of the suffering that this haphazard decree tries to inflict, and we urge the government to halt this inclination to wantonness, before it degenerates into anarchy.
