Discover the FA’s decision to probe Chelsea after Moisés Caicedo’s clash during their defeat to Brighton. Learn about the incident and potential consequences. London, 28 September 2025* - today, the Football Association stated that it will undertake a formal inquiry into the case where Wolverhampton Wanderers striker Julian Ca Cedo sustained a serious injury in the Premier League match between the two teams against Brighton & Hove Albion.

The match on 19 August at the Amex Stadium resulted in a 3-1 loss to Brighton. In the 38th minute, Ca Cedo suffered an injury to his left calf when he was high challenged by a Chelsea midfielder, N’Golo Kante. He has been carried off on a stretcher and has been declared unavailable till the end of the season.

How the FA is proceeding

Disciplinary panel of FA will consider:

Match footage - to find out if Kante was acting within fair play or has committed reckless or deliberate foul play.

Medical reports - to determine the extent of injury that Ca Cedo sustained and the causes.

Club statements - statements made by Chelsea, Brighton and Wolves, other statements made by those involved on the field.

Depending on whether the panel consider the challenge was reckless or dangerous, any disciplinary action may be a formal warning to a multi-match ban. A fine can also be added.

Reactions from key parties

Chelsea coach Mauricio Pochettino said he was very sorry about what happened. We have never compromised on playing safely. I wish Mr. Ca Cedo a full recovery and I also hope that the investigation by the FA is thorough and impartial. He further mentioned that the club would fully cooperate with the inquiry by the FA.

According to Brighton manager, Graham Potter, the injury was described as dramatic and unfortunate. Potter urged the football community to pay attention to the welfare of players and added Brighton had been rather unfortunate with the injuries this season.

A brief statement issued by Ca Cedo through his agent was as follows: I am thankful to have the support of my teammates, family and fans. I will be eager to be back on the field. It was a hard match but I am sure the FA will investigate into it.

The chief executive of the FA, Alan McCormack, remarked: The game of football is based on the safety of its players. We will investigate any accusation of foul play with recklessness and will not take it lightly.

The impact of this on the Premier League.

The governing body of the premier league has already made a statement to affirm that it will prioritize the safety of the players. It said that there are incidences of grave injuries during the matches, which are part of the game, yet that the league would go on to work with the FA to uphold the utmost standards of behavior on the field.

In the event that the investigation leads to disciplinary measures against Kante and the Chelsea club, both fans and pundits will be keen to see the balance that the authorities will strike between the physical nature of the sport and the need to safeguard players.

The disciplinary panel of the FA is reviewing the case, so watch this space. Brighton has a game in the Premier League on 26 September, and will proceed as planned but the vibrant striker of the club will miss the next couple of weeks as he recovers his wound.
