Take a look at the first photos from Maxton Hall Season 2, showing James spiraling while Ruby steps up to take charge. Get a glimpse of what’s ahead in the new season. According to star Harriet Herbig-Matten, Ruby will "go through her first heartbreak" in Season 2 of "Maxton Hall—The World Between Us."
The words "the course of true love never did run smooth" were written by William Shakespeare more than 400 years ago, but they could have been about the two people at the centre of Maxton Hall—The World Between Us who seem to have nothing in common.

After a rough and tearful journey from being enemies to lovers, James Beaufort (Damian Hardung), a troubled but sensitive rich kid, and Ruby Hall (Harriet Herbig-Matten), a bright scholarship student, finally gave in to their feelings (and their love) in the season 1 finale. It looked like these two beautiful, opposites-attract lovebirds would have a great future together at Oxford University. But then tragedy struck: James and his twin sister Lydia (Sonja Weißer) found out that their mother Cordelia had died of a stroke while they were out of town, and their cold and distant father Mortimer (Fedja van Huêt) hadn't even bothered to call them.

James is still in shock from his terrible loss when Season 2 of the hit Prime Video thriller starts. This makes him drink and party too much, which hurts himself. (See picture above) Herbig-Matten tells Entertainment Weekly, "He's basically acting like the old James because he's losing himself." “They broke up because of something that happened at the start of season 2 that I can't talk about. James is forgetting who he is and Ruby is going through her first breakup. Herbig-Matten says Ruby's "biggest fear" is feeling "out of control" for the first time in her life. To deal with this, she does what she always does: she works hard. Ruby thinks that the challenge of planning a charity gala for Alice Campbell (Proschat Madani), a famous human rights fighter and philanthropist, is a way to take her mind off of things. In the meantime, James sees it as a chance. "They're trying to raise money for the event because they need it," says Herbig-Matten. "If James wants to help Ruby get her money, that's the first thing he needs to do."

James and Ruby must first deal with their own problems, such as setting limits and putting their own wants first, before they can get back together. "Both characters do what they do for very different reasons," says Ceylan Yildirim, producer and head writer of Maxton Hall. “James grew up in a toxic family where he was forced to fit in, while Ruby, who has a scholarship, thinks she has to do her best and stand out from the crowd to reach her goals. Because of their relationship, they have to question the ways they have learnt to act for the first time.
Although Ruby and James' relationship is "put to the test," Yildirim says that in season 2, James' twin sister will become closer to Ruby. Ruby is the only person who knows Lydia's secret, so she turns to her for support as her pregnancy grows. The two young women were enemies in the first season, but this season they become friends and trust each other, says Yildirim. "We'll see how their relationships are affected by their different lives and the emotional problems Ruby is having with James."

In addition, Herbig-Matten says Lydia will have some much-needed girl time with Ruby's sister Ember (Runa Greiner) and Ruby's best friend Lin (Andrea Guo). She and her on-screen sister have a lot of great scenes together, which the actor enjoys. "My best friend is Runa." Since she's like my big sister, it's fun to play sister. Our relationship and link is the same as Ember and Ruby's. “That's really cool.”

To make things better, James's Aunt Ophelia (Dagny Dewath), who sees her nephew and niece again after Cordelia's funeral, will also be there for him this season. "Their mother tells stories about their aunt to James and Lydia," says Yildirim. "They've never talked to her directly." Ophelia changes how they think about their mother and the family background they didn't know about before. Frederic Ellington, played by Basil Eidenbenz, is the older brother of James' best friend Alistair, played by Justus Riesner. According to Yildirim, Frederic "gives us a glimpse behind the façade of the elite structures of the Ellington family."
Maxton Hall season 1 was a huge hit for Prime Video. It went to number one on the streamer's charts in more than 120 countries and was based on the best-selling books by Mona Kasten. She says that becoming a worldwide star overnight "was really overwhelming the first few months." I wasn't ready for you to be known not only in Germany but also in Italy and Spain. We didn't think that would happen.

This group of young adult fans is both loyal and loud, and Yildirim wants Maxton Hall viewers to know that she and the other writers and directors are paying attention. "The conversations fans have about the book series and their thoughts on our adaptation are very important to us." "Listening to the Booktok community was very important to us even when we were making season 1," she says. "The research we did into the characters and the world helped a lot with casting."
Many of the fans Herbig-Matten hears from are young women who want to become actors, and they all want Ruby and James to find love and be happy together. "Everyone wants them to get their problems fixed and get past all of their problems," the star says. Herbig-Matten says that Ruby and James are on their way, even though it looks like they have a long and bumpy road to relationship success: "Season 2 is about growing up." To change, to find each other again, and to heal.
