Leylah Fernandez ousted in 2nd round at US Open
Fernandez was out of action for most of the summer because she had a stress fracture in her right foot. She would have played Williams if both of them had made it to the fourth round, but she knew that would be hard because she only thought her game was about 30% good.
"It's hard to get to the top, but it's so easy to go down," Fernandez said. "That's what's happening right now."
Not only does it happen to her. Raducanu and Naomi Osaka, a two-time winner, both lost in the first round on Tuesday night. The most recent woman to win the U.S. Open was Bianca Andreescu, who beat Serena Williams in 2019 final.
Andreescu was going to play Beatriz Haddad Maia, the No. 15 seed, on Wednesday night.
Ons Jabeur, Coco Gauff, and Madison Keys will move on to the next round.

No. 12 The 20th-seeded Coco Gauff and the Madison Keys got out of trouble, so the Americans will play each other in the third round. Gauff beat Elena Gabriela Ruse 6-2, 7-6 (4), and Keys beat Camili Giorgi 6-4, 5-7, 7-6. Keys was the runner-up at the U.S. Open in 2017. (6).
Gauff was two points away from losing the second set at 5-3, but the 18-year-old came back. Gauff said that the 18-year-comeback old's shows that she has improved in an area of her game that wasn't there earlier in the season but could make the French Open finalist a threat now.
"Today, when I was down love-30, 5-3, I could have given up and moved on to the third set. Same for 15 to 40. But I didn't," Gauff said. "I think that shows progress. I feel like I would have lost those games in the past. Yes, it's about learning, and I think I'm getting better at it.
No. 5 Ons Jabeur beat Hana Mandlikova's daughter, Elizabeth Mandlik, 7-5, 6-2, to match her best U.S. Open result. Jabeur had just made it to the Wimbledon finals. Each of the last three times Jabeur went to New York, she lost in the third round.
"I have a mission," Jabeur said. "I'm No. 5 in the world, so I'm trying to live up to that number as much as possible so I can really improve my game and hopefully keep going up in the rankings."
She will play No. 31 seed Shelby Rogers, who beat Viktoria Kuzmova 7-5, 6-1, and is from the United States.
Daniil Medvedev, the defending men's champion, took the court after Williams. If he beat Arthur Rinderknech of France, he would play Wu Yibing in the third round. Wu Yibing was the first Chinese man to win a U.S. Open match since 1968, when professional tennis started.
