Amnesty International says that there have been more people put to death around the world.
A study from the international human rights group Amnesty International shows that the number of people around the world who have been sentenced to death has gone up by 53% from 2021 to 2022.
The group's study said that 883 people were put to death in 19 countries last year, but only 579 will be put to death in 2020.
These numbers don't include China, where the death sentence is kept secret and Amnesty estimates that thousands of people have been put to death.
Except for China, about 90% of the people who were killed around the world were done so in only three countries: Iran, Saudi Arabia, and Egypt.
In Iran, the number of people who were put to death went up from 314 in 2021 to 576 in 2022. In Saudi Arabia, the number of people who were put to death went from 65 in 2021 to 196 in 2022. Egypt killed 24 people in 2022, compared to 83 people in 2021.
At least four countries, including China, Iran, Saudi Arabia, and Singapore, have put people to death for drug crimes. By the end of 2022, 325 people will have been put to death for drug crimes.
The study goes on to say that fifty-five countries still put people to death for crimes that are similar.
