A woman was arrested for raping an 8-year-old boy
A middle-aged woman was found to have raped an eight-year-old boy and given him sexually transmitted diseases. This has caused a lot of talk in Tanzania.
Desderia Mbwelwa, who is 57 years old, was sentenced to 29 years in prison on Friday, but no details about the term have been given yet.
On the day of the event, the woman found the boy taking care of cattle in a village in the south of the Iringa region. She asked him where his friends were.
Then, he told her that his friends weren't around, so she had sex with him under a tree, so the story goes.
Five people testified in the case. One of them was a doctor who checked out the boy and proved that he was hurt and had sexually transmitted diseases because of the dirt found in his genitalia.
Mbwelwa is said to have defended herself by saying that she is an adult and that her children and grandkids depend on her.
Her lawyer, Frank Mwela, said he hopes to appeal the decision because his client wasn't tested to see if she really has sexually transmitted diseases.
"My client hasn't been tested to see if she has these diseases, but both she and one of her witnesses—who is her husband—have said that they don't have any diseases," he said.
