18-year-old Nigerian student receives 40 scholarship offers after graduating from US school with record-breaking marks.
Achunike Okafor, an 18-year-old Nigerian student who graduated from a school in the United States with a grade that broke a record, has been given no less than 40 scholarships.
Young Okafor got an International Baccalaureate diploma from Science Park High School in Newark, New Jersey, US. He had a grade point average of 4.625, which broke the record.
His GPA is the best among the 2,649 graduates from Newark's public schools in the Class of 2023. It is also the best ever for the city's public schools.
TapIntoNewark, an online newspaper, says that this led to him getting more than 40 scholarship offers, including many from the best colleges in the country like Columbia, Cornell, Dartmouth, Duke, Princeton, Penn State, Stanford, MIT, USC, and Rutgers.
"I am thankful for the chance to go to such prestigious universities and to represent my family and community," Okafor said. "I do not take the honor and responsibility of being one of the few people chosen for such honors lightly."
The 18-year-old wants to get a degree in biology from Harvard University.
"There's nothing average about him," said Darlene Gearhart, the director of Science Park.
"Achunike is a very interesting guy. He is polite, determined, and hardworking. He was always a good child. Gearhart said, "He is always eager to learn."
Superintendent of Schools Roger León said that Science Park High, the school district, and the city of Newark are all proud of what Achunike has done.
"Achunike Okafor is a person we are very proud of. His accomplishments show how hard he worked and how much he wanted to be the best. Mr. León said, "We hope he does well at Harvard and look forward to more achievements from him in the future."
Godfrey Okafor, Mr. Achunike's father, said that the family was also proud of what his son had done.
"In our home, we put a lot of value on schooling. "Young people can take care of themselves and their families and build their futures by getting an education and continuing to learn throughout their lives," said Mr. Okafor, a high school math teacher.
Mr. Okafor says that his other five children, including two older sons and three girls, are studying computer engineering, pharmacology, nursing, and law, respectively.
Mr. Achunike helped start the Science Club at his school and was vice president of the Junior Student Council and the Stand & Deliver Club. He was also head of the school's Future Educators Club and Black Student Union, co-captain of the robotics team, and treasurer of the Environmental Club.
