Atiku and Peter Obi criticize Tinubu for not accepting the EU's report on the elections in 2023.
Atiku Abubakar and Peter Obi, the candidates for the People's Democratic Party and the Labour Party in the 2023 election, have criticized President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for rejecting the European Union's final report on the February 25 presidential election.
Remember that on Tuesday, June 27, 2023, the EU team gave its report on the general election in Abuja.
The top observer, Barry Andrews, said that the report was based on an analysis of how well Nigeria kept its promises for democratic elections in the region and around the world.
Andrews blamed INEC for the problems and glitches with the bimodal voter accreditation system (BVAS) and the result viewing portal. He said that the differences hurt the public's trust in the election body very badly.
But in a statement released on Sunday, Dele Alake, the president's special advisor on special duties, communications, and strategy, said that the EU mission report is a poorly done desk job.
The federal government said that the EU mission didn't know much about the elections and that the group's conclusions were based on rumors, comments on social media, and statements from the opposition parties.
"Sometime in May, we sent out a news release to warn the country about a plan by a multilateral institution on the continent to ruin the Independent National Electoral Commission's general elections in 2023. The main goal was the presidential race, which was won by Bola Ahmed Tinubu, who ran for the All Progressives Congress at the time.
"To be clear, we want to say again that the 2023 general elections, especially the presidential election that President Bola Tinubu/All Progressives Congress won, were genuine, peaceful, free, fair, and the best organized general elections in Nigeria since 1999.
"Neither the European Union nor any other foreign or local group has given any solid proof that could be used to question the validity of the 2023 election results.
"11 analysts from Abuja and 40 observers from 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory were sent by the EU-EOM to watch the polls. We don't understand how the EU-EOM was able to freely watch the election in more than 176,000 polling places in Nigeria with only about one person per state.We'd like to know, and maybe even ask EU, how it came to the conclusions in its final report when its observers didn't spend much time watching the elections and instead relied on rumors, hearsay, and biased, uninformed social media comments and opposition talking heads?
"We are sure that the EU-EOM's "final report" on our recent elections is the result of a sloppy desk job that relied heavily on a few fights that happened in less than 1000 of the more than 176,000 polling places where Nigerians voted on election day. We have a lot of reasons to think that the cynical report, which was based on the opinions of less than 50 observers, was just meant to back up the same early criticism that was in the EU's preliminary report, which came out in March.
In response, Mr. Phrank Shaibu, who was the former Vice President's Special Assistant on Public Communications, said that the EU's final report on the elections of 2023 showed that the results of the election did not show what Nigerians wanted when they went to the polls to vote.
He said that Alake and the Presidency were wrong for trying to make the EU report look bad.
Shaibu said, "Even first graders who didn't vote know that INEC did a terrible job and that Tinubu stole the last election." The presidential election was on February 25, 2023, but the results have not been fully uploaded as of July 2, 2023. This is true even though this election cost more than any other in the history of politics in West Africa.
"How can any sane person believe that an election is valid when the full results haven't been uploaded in full after almost five months?"
"The EU not only trained INEC staff but also gave them tools, but INEC ran a terrible election anyway. So why would Alake say that the EU doesn't have a voice when it was the EU that gave the most money to INEC? "Mr. Alake should shut up rather than try to defend something that can't be defended," he said.
Obiora Ifoh, who is the acting National Publicity Secretary of the Labour Party, called the Federal Government's reaction to the EU report "medicine after death" in his own statement.
Ifoh said, "The Labour Party supports what the EU observation mission says." We've always said that this election was fixed in a huge way to help the APC and their candidate win.
"What the FG says is just a band-aid after the fact. Even the blind and the deaf can see and hear, so they know that this election was fixed. As you know, the proof was given at the tribunal, and I don't mean to brag.
"No matter what the FG says, it's clear that INEC is not independent in any way. We all know that it depends on what the government wants to do. But Nigerians hope that the panel will make things right by fixing what went wrong. That's where we're at. So there is no reason to support INEC's honesty. Nigerians know who won already. Even the information in front of the court makes it very clear."
