Zainab Ahmed, a former finance minister of Nigeria, has a new position at the World Bank.
Zainab Ahmed, who used to be Nigeria's Minister of Finance, has a new job at the World Bank.
Vanguard says that Mrs. Ahmed will go back to work as a substitute executive director on July 10, 2023, at the bank's main office in Washington.
But there are different opinions about whether the previous minister of finance is the right person for the job.
Today, a website reported that sources in Washington said that Mrs. Ahmed got around the rules for appointments by naming herself.
The report also said that the World Bank had asked for three economists to be considered for an AED post a few months before President Muhammadu Buhari's term ended, but the minister kept the letter to herself.
It was also said that the minister did not get President Buhari's or the new President, Sen. Bola Tinubu's, approval before she put herself forward.
But a person in a high position in the federal government who knows how the World Bank works told Vanguard that Mrs. Ahmed didn't do anything wrong in getting the job.
"It's impossible for her to put herself forward," the person said. She didn't, though. She was nominated by the Ministry (of Finance) in the right way, and President Buhari gave his approval before he went.
"This kind of nomination is common. A former DG Budget was nominated at the end of the Jonathan government, and no one made a fuss about it. It's not fair at all.
"The former head of the budget was chosen to be the head of the African Development Bank."
The source said that the AED job is usually held by past Ministers of Finance (World Bank Governors) or Permanent Secretaries in the Federal Ministries of Finance (World Bank Alternate Governors).
He also said, "Please keep in mind that the ED from South Africa was a former Minister from South Africa. The job is for a former Minister of Finance (Governor of the World Bank) or Permanent Secretary of Finance (Alternate Governor of the World Bank) who knows about development policy problems and the transfer of real resources to developing countries.
"And those who understand World Bank Executive Board issues and have helped shape World Bank decisions from the point of view of Authorities/member countries in recent years."
"It's not a job for theorists who have never worked with the Ministry of Finance in a Sovereign member country."
Mrs. Ahmed will work for Ayanda Dlondlo, who used to be a minister in South Africa and is now the Executive Director.
