BREAKING: Court again orders DSS to release suspended CBN governor Emefiele
Godwin Emefiele, the suspended governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria, has been detained and interrogated illegally, according to a Federal Capital Territory High Court in Abuja, which has ordered the Department of State Services (DSS) to release him.
Only 24 hours had passed before another court issued a similar verdict.
The presiding judge ruled on an Originating Motion on Notice brought before the court by Mr. Emefiele against the Incorporated Trustees of the Forum for Accountability and Good Leadership, the Attorney General of the Federation, the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, Inspector General of Police, State Security Service, and the Central Bank of Nigeria, holding that the arrest, detention, and questioning violated the orders and judgments of Justice M. A. Hassa.
Emefiele requested that the arrest and imprisonment of the applicant be overturned, quashed, invalidated, and declared null and void due to Justice M. A. Hassan's ongoing ruling from December 29, 2022, through his attorney Peter Abang.
A warrant of arrest obtained or procured by the respondents, particularly the DSS, for the arrest, detention, and/or questioning of Mr. Emefiele in connection with allegations of financing of terrorism, fraud, money laundering, round-tripping, and a threat to national security before or from any court since the date of Justice M. A. Hassan's judgment was set aside, quashed, invalidated, and nullified by Justice Kawu.
In response to the most recent decision, Mr. Emefiele's attorney told reporters that Nigerians should celebrate not only the release of his client but also the fact that judges in that country are brave enough to administer justice without regard to who gets hurt despite numerous acts of intimidation by security agencies and some unfavorable working conditions.
He urged the DSS to act swiftly in accordance with the court's instructions and free his client so that he could go take care of his deteriorating health, which had been made worse by his client's illegal and unlawful arrest and incarceration for more than a month.
