Civil defence operatives arrest two suspects with fake $30,900 (N23.9m) in Jigawa

Two suspects were detained by members of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defense Corps (NSCDC), Jigawa State Command, for having counterfeit money worth $30,900 US (N23.9m).

This was announced by the command's spokesman, CSC Adamu, while the suspects were being paraded on Friday, July 14, 2023, at the command's headquarters in the state capital of Dutse.

The suspects are Abdurrahman Khalid, 35, and Danladi Umar, 25, both of Tashar Musawa, Zaria LGA, Kaduna State.

He claims that "the suspects were arrested when One Danladi Umar lodged a complaint that One Abdurrahman Khalid deceived and defrauded him by linking him up with One Malam who collected the sum of N147,500 to provide him with a local charm"

He claimed that while the latter acknowledged the claim, he claimed that Danladi had presented him with fake foreign currency and asked him how to spend it without incident. He said he knew one Malam Haruna who lived in Nguru, Yobe State, who could assist him in turning the fake currency into real money.

Danladi feared foul play when the purported Malam was unable to be reached for days via his phone and reported the incident to the NSCDC Divisional office in the Sule Tankarkar LGA.

Later, Danladi admitted that he had obtained the phony money from one Zakari, who is still at large, in Marabar Jos, Kaduna State, and had paid N75,000 (N25,000 per bundle) for the three bogus bundles of $10,000.

CSC. Adamu claimed that the suspects had turned over $30,900 US Dollars, or roughly 24 million Naira, through the Investors and Exporters Foreign Exchange (I&E FX) window.

According to him, the cases of forgery and criminal conspiracy are against provisions 369 and 96 of the constitution and are punishable by sections 329 and 97 of Jigawa State's penal code.

After all investigations are complete, the suspects will be charged with crimes and prosecuted in court.
