Fear as gas explosion razes residential building in Lagos
On Cascol Street in the Ojo neighborhood of Lagos State, a gas explosion tore down a residential building, leaving behind buildings that were completely devastated.
An explosion of camp gas inside the eight-room cottage on Saturday, 15 July 2023, ignited the blaze.
The Lagos State Fire and Rescue Services spokesperson, Amodu Shakiri, verified the event and said one of the inhabitants was cooking in the building's corridor when the explosion took place.
He claimed, "One of the building's residents was using a camp gas to cook when it exploded, severely burning the building and everything inside.
Since there was no special location on the property designated as a kitchen, we also discovered that the hallway was utilised as their kitchen. Additionally, we discovered at least six camp gases there. When we received the report at around 9:05 am, we were able to contain the fire to only that structure, keeping other buildings safe from the gas-induced fire.
According to Shakiri, if not for the detachment of a few officers from the military cantonment of Ojo who guarded the firefighters as they went about their work, the situation would have been fatal.
The residents of the building managed to leave unharmed, he said, therefore there was no casualty.
