HRW accused the Tunisian authorities of abusing migrants

Human Rights Watch has called on the European Union to halt its aid to Tunisia following a recent study that revealed the country's security forces are torturing black African immigrants.

Human Rights Watch has discovered that foreign nationals are frequently subjected to abuses such as theft of money and property, arbitrary arrests and detentions, disproportionate use of force, sometimes even torture, and beatings.

Tunisia has been dealing with immigrant-related issues since the beginning of this year.

Lauren Seibert, director of research and protection of refugee rights at Human Rights Watch, claimed that the Tunisian government had mistreated black people, encouraged racism and xenophobia, and sent back people who had fled in boats because they were under threat to the same place they had fled, despite the difficulties they would face.

Human Rights Watch interviewed 24 Tunisian residents over the phone in March, including 22 men, one woman, and one youngster.

There are 19 immigrants from Senegal, Mali, Cote d'Ivoire, Guinea, Sierra Leone, Cameroon, and Sudan among them, as well as four asylum applicants and one refugee.
