Rescue operation suspended despite missing people after landslides in India

The search for survivors has been put on hold by Indian authorities four days after a disastrous landslip struck a village in the western state of Maharashtra.

Following the landslip that happened in Irshalwadi hamlet in the Raigad district, 27 bodies were discovered while 57 persons were still unaccounted for.

The inclement weather and persistent rain made rescue efforts difficult.

According to a junior minister, the choice was made following negotiations with the Raigad administration and other authorities.

The village, which is on the way up to a hill called Irshalgad, saw a landslip late Wednesday night that damaged many of the homes there.
