Security Officers Arrest Niger's President Fearing a Coup
The residence and workplace of President Mohamed Bazoum in the Republic of Niger have been sealed off by security personnel.
The West African nation has had four coups since achieving independence from France in 1960, as well as more recent coup attempts, making it one of the nations experiencing conflicts.
The president is safe and in good health, the national security officers stated in a statement. He is at home with his family, the person said.
Although there were no armed forces present, the gate to Bazoum's residence and workplace in the presidential palace in Yamai was locked.
In February 2010, the nation had its most recent coup, which resulted in the removal of President Mamadou Tandja.
But on March 31, 2021, only two days before Bazoum took office as president of the nation, there was yet another coup attempt.
Numerous persons have been detained, including Sani Gourouza, a captain in the National Army.
He was taken into custody and turned over to Niger authorities from the neighbouring nation of Benin.
Bazoum's second coup attempt, according to a Niger official, occurred in March of this year "while the president was in Turkey," but the authorities made no mention of the occurrence.
