Tinubu has seven days to publish information about the N400 billion in fuel subsidy savings.
President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has been given a seven-day deadline by the Socio-Economic Rights and Accountability Project (SERAP) to "publish details of spending amounting to about N400 billion" as a result of the elimination of gasoline subsidies.
This was stated in a letter sent to the president on Sunday and signed by Kolawole Oluwadare, the deputy director of SERAP.
The letter begged the Nigerian president to outline how any future savings will be used, including specific initiatives and safeguards to prevent money from being misused, embezzled, or redirected to personal accounts.
"Your government has a legal obligation to make sure that the money saved by eliminating the gasoline subsidy is only used to aid the 137 million underprivileged Nigerians who would be hardest hit by the elimination.
"Prevention of corruption in the spending of savings from the removal of subsidy on petrol and preventing and addressing the challenges caused by the removal are serious and legitimate public interests," SERAP wrote in the letter.
Nigerians have a right to know how their savings are being used, claims the organization.
According to the group, disclosing specifics about how the savings were used will increase accountability, and openness, and lessen the likelihood of corruption in the process.
"Opacity in the spending of the savings from subsidy removal would have detrimental effects on the core interests of the citizens and the public interest," it stated.
"The removal of the subsidy on gasoline would continue to erode Nigerians' rights and raise their susceptibility to poverty and social suffering unless the government is transparent and accountable to Nigerians in how it uses the savings.
Transparency would prevent money saved from the withdrawal of subsidies from going into private pockets and boost public confidence that these savings would be utilized to help Nigerians.
"The National Social Safety Net Programme (NASSP)'s execution and expenditures have mostly been cloaked in secrecy.
"Publishing the details of the N400 billion spending and other savings from the removal of subsidy would also ensure that persons with public responsibilities are answerable to the people for the performance of their duties, including the management of the funds."
