A building collapsed in Abuja, killing at least two people, many of whom were trapped
A two-storey building collapsed in Abuja, the capital of Nigeria on Wednesday evening, killing at least two people and trapping many others.
A Reuters news agency witness said he saw two bodies pulled from the rubble of the collapsed building at around 11:00 pm (2pl0 GMT) on Wednesday. Many people are also stuck, and emergency workers are taking the injured to the hospital.
The building consists of residential houses and commercial shops in the Garki neighborhood in the center of Abuja.
A businessman from a neighboring building, Yakubu Inuwa, told Reuters news agency that, "We helped to evacuate some people, two who were not breathing. More than 20 people were also taken out from the rubble."
Building collapse is common in Africa's most populous country, where codes of practice are not well enforced and building materials are of poor quality.
