The Moroccan lawyer accused of criticizing the king on social media said he was sentenced to five years in prison.
Said Boukioud was charged with defamation of the royal family for a message he published on his Facebook page in 2020, criticizing the kingdom's ties to Israel.
He is currently living in Qatar.
Morocco's constitution puts King Mohammed in charge of dealing with foreign countries, and any criticism of him will result in severe punishment.
Boukioud's lawyer, El Hassan Essouni, said the sentence was harsh and they will appeal.
