Al-Qaeda claimed to have killed 17 Niger soldiers
The Sahel branch of al-Qaeda has claimed responsibility for the killing of 17 Nigerien soldiers in an attack carried out by jihadists in the Tillaberi area.
Jamaat Nusrat al-Islam wal-Muslimin (JNIM) claimed responsibility in a statement published on its Telegram page on August 17.
She said the attackers ambushed the soldiers between the towns of Boni and Torodi near the Niger-Burkina Faso border last Tuesday.
The group published four photos of the stolen vehicles and weapons after the attack.
The Niger Army said 17 soldiers were killed and 20 others wounded, saying it killed 100 of the attackers while they were trying to escape.
JNIM's statement comes as the Ecowas group says it is planning to send military forces to Niger to force the country's military to restore civilian rule after the overthrow of Mohamed Bazoum's government in July.
