We will look for a country to send our troops to when we leave Niger - America

The commander of the American forces in Europe and Africa said that they have started planning to take steps if they are asked to leave Niger, including looking for a country to return them to in West Africa, as reported by American media.

"We will be ready in case something happens," said General James Hecker during his online press conference on Friday.

"There are many steps we can take if we are going to leave [Niger]. We must be ready to take all the steps... but we hope it will not come to that.

"We will have to look at other countries that we will be friends with in [West] Africa and that we will send our equipment there."

The United States has at least 1,000 troops in Niger working to fight jihadists in the Sahel region, and has not yet declared the overthrow of Bazoum's government as a coup d'état.

Once the United States declares the situation as a coup d'état, it will directly affect its relations with Niger, which may end the support it gives to the country and the presence of its forces there.
