Rising leaders from the United States and around the world who are already making a difference in their communities can take their work to the next level through the Obama Foundation Scholars program. This is done through an immersive curriculum that combines academic, skills-based, and hands-on learning.
The Obama Foundation Scholars Program application period for 2023–2024 is now closed.
The Scholars program at Columbia University and the University of Chicago gives people who have shown a commitment to service the tools they need to make their efforts more effective, find new ways to solve complex global problems, and promote change through values-based leadership.
The program creates long-lasting connections between young leaders who want to work together to solve the most important problems of our time. This makes a global network that goes beyond countries and issues.
After the program is over, Obama Foundation Scholars will: Go back to work on their chosen global problem and put their personal action plan into action to speed up positive change in their community.
Have the chance to help the Obama Foundation motivate, empower, and connect future leaders from all over the world.

Throughout the academic year, the Obama Foundation offers a full curriculum of leadership development, training, networking activities, and personalized support to help the Obama Scholars get the skills, tools, and experiences they need to make their work have a bigger impact when they get back home. Scholars can learn from high-level leaders in different fields and from the network of Obama Foundation program participants, who have a lot of knowledge. They can also plan how they want to use their new skills, networks, and knowledge after they finish the program.
Foundation-led activities include Scholars from both UChicago and Columbia, with the goal of creating a larger global community of practice for shared learning. This will help Scholars improve how they do their own work and speed it up when they go back to their hometowns after graduation. Each cohort's experience is designed to take advantage of the study ecosystems of these two world-class institutions and the cities where they are located. This gives Scholars in Chicago and New York City the chance to learn in a way that is both unique and deep.
Key parts of the experience led by the Obama Foundation include an orientation program to welcome the cohort to the Obama Foundation community, a mid-program gathering, and a graduation program to celebrate the cohort's accomplishments and share their action plans.
Leadership Development Workshops and Conversations are meant to help Scholars tell the story of their work, think about and improve how they lead, and build long-lasting personal strength. Scholars also learn about new ideas from the Obama Foundation program alumni group and talk to high-level thought leaders from different fields through a variety of virtual session formats.
Develop and improve an action plan that is based on what they have learned throughout the program and is centered on their focus project and their vision for the future of their work.
The Foundation makes it easy for current Obama Scholars and those from previous years to get in touch with each other based on the topics they care about.
Customized support, like an executive coach and experts in strategic communications and funding, to help Scholars come up with action plans and move forward on their own leadership journeys.
